Charlene of Monaco with veil 1

Do wear a veil in the presence of the Pope

Pope Leo XIV visited the Principality of Monaco on March 28, 2026. The last Pope to do so was Pope Paul III in 1538, that is, 488 years ago. Monaco is the second smallest Sovereign Sate in the world after Vatican City.

The presence of the Pope in Monaco was, therefore, a great event. A full one-day-visit where Prince Albert and Princess Charlene gave the Pope a royal reception. The people of Monaco – 93% of the 38.000 inhabitants are Catholics – packed the Louis II stadium for the papal Mass.

During the ceremonies she attended in the presence of the Pope, Princess Charlene wore a veil. In the 18th century Pope Pius VII gave certain designated Catholic Queens the privilege to wear white apparel – the veil included – in the presence of the Pope. According to standard Vatican protocol, women typically dress in black and wear a veil when they meet the Pope on official visits.

This "Privilège du blanc" (Privilege of White) was given to honor their fidelity to the Catholic Church. Princess Charlene rightly used this privilege and appeared in an impeccable white dress with a veil.

She gave a twofold example: First, to wear a veil in the presence of the Pope. Second, to wear white, as the spouse of a Sovereign Prince, to express her pride to be Catholic.

Do wear a veil in the presence of the Pope.
