Prevost shakes pagan ritual instrument
During the October 1, 2025 general audience, Pope Leo XIV greeted a group of indigenous from the Brazilian Amazon, led by Rebeca Ferreira Munduruku. The group presented him with a maracá, the traditional Amazonian rattles adorned with human hair or feathers. In many indigenous cultures, the maracás are sacred instruments used for communicating with spirits and ancestors. It is also used to cure, bless and protect.
Leo XIV briefly shook the rattle, which he kept as a gift. By so doing Pope Prevost takes steps that bring him closer to the position adopted by Francis, which ended in the public worship of Pachamama at the Vatican.
Small steps that cross a long distance from his supposed orthodoxy to the well trodden path of idolatry, consistently walked by his predecessor.
