Godspell performed for Leo XIV in Madrid
Yesterday, June 6, 2026, Leo XIV presided over a Youth Vigil in Madrid. The local religious authorities believed it fit to present to him a wild performance mimicking a 1971 American musical called Godspell. That old musical was a mockery of the Gospel of St. Matthew presenting Jesus Christ, St. John the Baptist and the first Christians as a tribe of hippies, as shown in the three first rows below. The name Godspell is already an irreverent play of the word Gospel. Our Lord was depicted as a long-haired hippie wearing a Superman shirt, while St. John the Baptist donned an old jacket of a Confederate officer.
Yesterday's Spanish version of that musical – from the fourth row down – kept the Superman shirt for "Jesus Christ" and a type of military jacket for "St. John the Baptist." It also kept the hippie tone of the old musical, but emphasized the clownish and immoral notes which were much less present in the original. It added a frenzied, up-tempo rock-gospel beat to the original Broadway songs, which were a folk adaptation of actual Protestant Episcopal hymns.
The fact that the worst enemies of the Catholic Church want to present Our Lord Jesus Christ as a clown and our Holy Faith as foolishness is hateful, but understandable, since between the Church and the Secret Forces there was always a mortal and constant fight.
How to explain, however, that the Spanish religious authorities would choose this performance to greet Leo XIV when he visits Spain as the Vicar of Christ for the first time? How to explain that he warmly applauded the performance? Is there not something here that demands more analysis? We leave the answer to our readers...
