Egalitarianism - III

Science against Man as King of Creation

In the last two articles (here and here) we dealt with the question of egalitarianism. We talked about the importance of presenting our thesis and we pointed out the central fact that the Egalitarian Revolution encompasses, contains and regulates almost every aspect of today's life.

It is imperative for us to know how to prove that this Egalitarian Revolution exists. Then, afterwards, we can sustain the thesis in this analysis that this desire for equality is in itself something bad and diabolical.

If, then, we are constantly seeing a multitude of small transformations that try to justify themselves for their own specific reasons – for example, the use of the tie that is dying out, manners that are becoming more egalitarian, furniture that is becoming more egalitarian, etc., then we can become aware of the general Egalitarian Revolution.

Let us take the example of furniture. It is curious to note that in this Egalitarian Revolution, furniture tends to get lower every day. When we sit in the furniture from the past, even furniture for the home, one can note that it was constructed to seat a man conscious of his human dignity. Thus, the seats of the chairs and sofas are set far above the ground level, the backrest is designed to help keep a man erect, and at times there are no arms so that the man must be upright and not slouch.

To the measure that the egalitarian movement grows, the furniture tends to get lower, and is made so that the man sinks – or rather sprawls – more and more into the furniture. Now, if we try to argue that it is not appropriate for the furniture to be low, we will enter a futile discussion. There will be a number of small fifth-order reasons presented to prove otherwise. It is the wrong path to take.

The right way is to prove that this lowering of furniture is just one phenomenon that corresponds to a multitude of other such phenomena demonstrating this tendency to make high things lower. Even in the skyscrapers that are ever higher, there is a tendency for the height of the rooms in these many stories to be lower than in those of the past. And on these many floors everything is as modest, small, diminutive, standardized and uniform as possible. If we can prove this, we will close the dispute.

Another example is the question of wearing or not wearing a tie. One can make many objections to the tie: It causes effort to put it on, it gets stains, it strangles the neck, etc. to justify not using it, but in the end it falls into the same leveling pattern.

Transformations increasingly egalitarian

We have an absolute need to avoid falling into discussing these little problems and to place our line of defense on a much higher plane, where we can demonstrate that we are not facing just one small egalitarian transformation. Rather, these egalitarian transformations are taking place in every possible field and in every possible way; and each one is fundamentally egalitarian. That is the important point.

Therefore, it must be affirmed that there is no transformation that is not egalitarian. In the end, everything is moving towards egalitarianism. Then, if everything is moving towards egalitarianism, it is because there is an enormous appetite for egalitarianism, since it is not natural that the solution to all matters should be egalitarian. At times this could be, but for everything, no. This uniformity is completely unnatural. It is a way of forcing reality to make the desire for equality live, and it should be analyzed.

How can we prove that that this Egalitarian Revolution is pushing egalitarianism in everything? Evidently I have sought examples in the most diverse fields, because the success of exemplification consists in proving that the error exists in every field.

Clearly I do not intend that this enumeration be complete, which would not be possible here. The things I point out are what occur to me; and I would be most pleased if others would provide more interesting examples to add to or replace those that I mention.

One example that occurs to me is the growing scientific vulgarization that tends to flatten man so that he is no longer the king of creation.

The first curious thing that calls my attention is the way that today’s scientific vulgarization, such as in science books, presents the universe to contemporary man. We know that God created the universe, as Scripture says, in which everything has its form, weight and measure. For this reason, the universe is very harmonious, and we find in it beings of all possible sizes, thus presenting a true hierarchy of sizes.

Now, as far as I have been able to see, scientific vulgarization flattens man in relation to these fabulous immensely grand distances that exist in the universe – the differences of masses, sizes, weights, infinities, etc. The curious effect this has is to always make man feel like an ant inside the universe, where he feels small and flattened, incapable of realizing his own value and sovereignty in relation to this universe.

When many things are reduced to being very small, they become leveled among themselves. For example, when 10 men stand at the foot of the Himalayas, it makes no sense to discuss which of them is the tallest, because the Himalayas flatten them all with its great mass.

So also, in this universe man becomes as if lost when placed amidst an inhospitable world, as for example in the middle of a large modern city. In these immense megalopolises, the man is flattened inside them. This is how scientific vulgarization takes pleasure in presenting the universe.

With this it gives men a strange sense of equalization among themselves, and at the same time takes away the sense of the man’s sovereignty over the universe. It takes away this sovereignty, as if proclaiming the universe a republic, because the sense that man as king of the universe reigning over it is abolished.

At the College of St. Benedict in São Paulo, the back windows of my classroom give to a large and beautiful panorama where you can see a part of Lapa, Pompeii, etc. The other day, I was there when another professor came in and expressed these thoughts: “Look, Dr. Plinio, when we see these grand horizons and nature, we understand how man is just an ant. And when we see these immeasurable distances, etc.”

And so, instead of entering into supernatural considerations that would be appropriate before such a panorama, he fell into the idea that man is lost in the universe, a more or less pantheistic concept. It is exactly this egalitarian leveling that science makes of man in face of the universe

When it is not the immensely great that is given relevance, it is the immensely small that is emphasized – but in a way that places man before such a small thing without being able to analyze it in depth. These small matters pass by him, and once again his reign over the universe seems to disappear. It is another humiliation for man.

The Romanticism of the past presented an idealized view of man in nature

Today there is much insistence on this view, different from years ago when it would have been commonplace to show the harmony and immense gradations of the universe, and the hierarchy that exists in it with its differing values, sizes and weights, rather than situating it in a dimension foreign to us. It was seen precisely in the same way that God placed the earth so that the world becomes habitable.

Today we see that this order is not denied, but is silenced. This scientific vulgarization highlights a different set of values. It is a scientific vulgarization that evidently creates an egalitarian sense.

All the aspects of nature (not just its weight, measure, etc but also its actual contact with us) everything that shows the beauty of variety, diversity and harmony in art, literature, etc receives little attention. In the past seeing all these aspects was the common way for the Romantics to view the world. They enjoyed speaking about these things. Nowadays, this is hardly mentioned.

I recall how I would find and enjoy immensely the remnants of an old literature that accentuated the diversities of nature. I remember reading the description of a trip to Niterói (in the State of Rio de Janeiro) made by Viscount of Taunay. In it he made a very interesting observation as he saw everyone entering that old ship at its port.

And what were his thoughts? Instead of being like today’s man who thinks primarily about the ship, he makes a brief reference to the ship and then goes on to speak of the men who were entering the boat. He writes that he began to pay attention to the diversity of the faces of those who entered it, and to consider how God who, with so few elements – the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth and head shape – could make so many dizzyingly different faces.

This leads us naturally to delight in the great capacity of God, the immense power of God as the Creator of differences that are harmonious among themselves. Observations of this nature were frequent in the old literature. As far as I can see, this is a point that is little made today. On the contrary, if anything is highlighted, it is the uniformities of nature.
