Ich geh’ mit meiner Laterne (“I go with my lantern") is a traditional German song for St. Martin’s Day (November 11). One of the
old popular customs is for children to walk through the streets on that eve with lanterns singing
this song.
According to legend, St. Martin was called by the people of Tours to be its Bishop but
he did not want to accept the office. He fled from the city and hid on a farm on its outskirts. The people of the city, who loved St. Martin, went seeking him with their lanterns. Finally, a goose
that would not stop gobbling revealed his hiding spot and the Saint was obliged to accept the dignity.
Perhaps due to its charm and simplicity, the song became one of the best-known nursery rhymes in Germany, featuring prominently in primary schools.
