Es kommt ein Schiff geladen

German Advent song

Es kommt ein Schiff geladen (A ship is coming laden) is a traditional German Advent song and Marian hymn. It is one of the oldest German religious songs.

The song dates back to the Middle Ages and is often attributed to the German Dominican mystic Johannes Tauler. The text of the song compares Our Lady to a ship carrying a precious freight, sailing silently under the mast of the Holy Spirit.

The ship reaches the harbor, the anchor is dropped, and through the fiat of Our Lady, the Christ Child is given to the world. For us to embrace the Christ Child, we must first embrace the suffering of our earthly pilgrimage, so that, with Him, we can then rise to Eternal Life.

Es kommt ein Schiff geladen is interpreted here by the Schwarzwälder Sängerknaben (“Black Forest Boys Choir”).

Lyrics:

Latin lyrics

1. Es kommt ein Schiff, geladen
Bis an sein' höchsten Bord,
Trägt Gottes Sohn voll Gnaden,
Des Vaters ewig's Wort.

2. Das Schiff geht still im Triebe,
Es trägt ein' teure Last;
Das Segel ist die Liebe,
Der Heilig' Geist der Mast.

3. Der Anker haft' auf Erden,
Da ist das Schiff am Land.
Das Wort will Fleisch uns werden,
Der Sohn ist uns gesandt.

4. Zu Bethlehem geboren
Im Stall ein Kindelein,
Gibt sich für uns verloren;
Gelobet muß es sein.

5. Und wer dies Kind mit Freuden
Umfangen, küssen will,
Muß vorher mit ihm leiden
Großt’ Pein und Marter viel,

6. Danach mit ihm auch sterben
Und geistlich auferstehn,
Das ewig Leben erben,
Eie an ihm ist gescheh'n.

7. Maria, Gottes Mutter,
Gelobet musst du sein.
Jesus ist unser Bruder,
Das liebe Kindelein.

English translation:

1. A ship is coming,
Fullen laden on board,
Carrying God's Son full of Grace,
The Father's Eternal Word.

2. The ship moves silently onward,
It carries a precious freight;
The Sail is Love,
The Holy Spirit is the mast.

3. The Anchor is on earth,
The ship has come ashore,
The Word becomes Flesh among us,
The Son is sent to us.

4. Born to Bethlehem
A child in the stable,
He has given Himself up for us;
He must be praised.

5. And  whoever with pleasure
Wants to embrace and kiss this Child,
Must first endure suffering with Him
And great pains and torments,

6. Then with Him we must also die,
And rise up spiritually,
To inherit Eternal Life,
As He did.

7. Mary, Mother of God,
You must be praised.
Jesus is our Brother,
The dear Child.
