Good Friday Antiphon

Ait Latro

Ait Latro is an antiphon for Lauds on Good Friday. The singer celebrates the mystery of the redemption. Let us be as the good thief, recognizing death as the just wage of sin, but seeing in Christ the guiltless sacrifice that redeems mankind. The singer praises that Our Lord has sacrificed himself for our salvation; the captivity of Jacob is at an end.

Ait Latro is the antiphon preceding Psalm 84 on Good Friday. It is here sung by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes.

Latin lyrics

Ait Latro ad latronem:
Nos quidem digna factis recipimus:
Hic autem quit fecit?
Memento mei, Domine,
Dum veneris in regnum tuum.

Benedicisti, Domine, terram tuam:
Avertisti captivitatem Jacob.

Remisisti iniquitatem plebis tuae:
Operuisti omnia peccata eorum.

Ait Latro ad latronem:
Nos quidem digna factis recipimus:
Hic autem quit fecit?
Memento mei, Domine,
Dum veneris in regnum tuum.

English translation

The thief said to the thief:
We, indeed, receive the due reward of our deeds;
But what has this man done?
Remember me, O Lord, when Thou shalt come into thy kingdom.

Thou has blessed thy land, O Lord:
Thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.

Thou has forgiven the iniquity of they people:
Thou has covered all their sins.

The thief said to the thief:
We, indeed, receive the due reward of our deeds;
But what has this man done?
Remember me, O Lord,
When Thou shalt come into thy kingdom.
