Communion in hand from JPII 01

John Paul II gives Communion in the hand to children
At a Mass said in a stadium on the outskirts of Rome, John Paul II gives Communion in the hand to children. To assure that the children would place their hands properly, a cleric was near the Pope to instruct them. Below, another shot of the same event.

Today Catholic public opinion is becoming more conservative and rejecting Communion in the hand. So where on the spectrum of tendencies should we situate JPII, who - at least until now - was considered "conservative" by many?
