Changeable Doctrine, the ‘Infinite’
& Danger of Nicaea

A Catholic Native American

TIA,

Just met a Native American elder, head speaker at a meeting tomorrow in Santa Cruz. … Very fascinated by Dr. Horvat’s Mary Agreda posts (here, here and here), I will order some hard copies for him tomorrow.

He said to me: “I am a confirmed Catholic. I went to only Catholic Church schools. We only allow the Catholic Church on our reservation. Never had any other.” He felt sane, sober in manner. I will get his address and order him your book.

     Thank you.

     E.K.

Particular Concept of Doctrine

Hello TIA,

So, doctrine according to Leo XIV can sound good to both progressivists and trads, depending on who hears it. Seems he has mastered the ambiguity employed at Vatican II to make Catholics swallow a new theology.

For example – he admits that, even though it is not politically correct, he supports doctrine as a means to seek the truth. “Hurrah!” shout the trads. “He’s one of us.”

Then he goes on to explain what he means by doctrine, drawing on Hegel who structured his own thought into a “doctrine of being,” a “doctrine of essence,” and a “doctrine of concept.” A doctrine, Prevost explains, is organized knowledge – serious, rigorous – that stands apart from mere opinion or ideology. Its purpose isn’t to coerce, but to guide, respecting freedom of conscience.

Doctrine, he writes, is not about “quick answers” or “imposing truth.” Instead, it teaches us how to resist ideology. “Every ideology, no matter how perfect it may seem, ends up turning against the human person,” he writes. He calls out Marxism; then Liberalism. And then sets both aside. When the Church speaks, he argues, it’s not to govern, but to remind the world that social issues are, at their core, moral ones. Violence against women, abuse, ecology...

A quite changeable notion of doctrine.

Francis Enters the ‘Infinite’

Dear TIA,

Someone sent me a video [below] of some Buddhist monks singing a macabre tune to “celebrate” the entrance of Francis into the “infinite”…

I wonder what infinite is this, since when we die we are judged and go either to Heaven – often with atime in Purgatory – or Hell. If we assume that he went to the same place the Buddhists go, the perspective is not that cool…

     Regards,

     P.M.

Alleviating Suffering in Purgatory

Dear TIA,

In her letter, C.P. says this:

“The children’s friend, who is still in Purgatory and will be until the end of time, was a reminder that God's Justice is not like ours. How severe her punishment when not even our prayers can help her.”

I have often thought of this poor soul and have hoped that since the people of Fatima and others, upon hearing this from Our Lady, began praying more devoutly for that woman's soul, and possibly reducing her time in Purgatory.

It seems to make sense to me and I hope I am right.

Dr. Horvat responds:

Dear S.S.,

I believe you are on the right track. Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres was asked to suffer 5 years in Hell to save the soul of la Capitana, the nun at the head of the internal revolt in the convent. Our Lady told her that even with this, the nun would be in Purgatory until the end of the world. After her death, Mother Mariana offered many prayers and sacrifices for that sister to alleviate her suffering during her long exile from Heaven.

I have a Jewish friend who converted, and she has a special care for La Capitana for some reason, and also prays daily for her in order to alleviate her suffering.

So, while we cannot change the time of the stay, we can certainly help to alleviate the suffering of those souls who are there with our prayers and sacrifices.

     Cordially,

     Marian Horvat, Ph. D.

Is Nicaea’s Danger Over?

TIA,

We all had a great concern that Pope Francis would go to Nicaea to chnage the date of Easter and accept the liturgical calendar of the Schismatics, or so-called Orthodox, and by doing so create a great turmoil among Catholics. Fortunately, he was not able to accomplish it since he died before the scheduled May meeting. We had a moment of relief. Now, reading the news report below, the concern returns.

Indeed, the article says Leo will follow the “plans” of Francis. So, while May 20 went by without a meeting to compromise the liturgy, what will happen in November?

1,700th anniversary: The dates of Nicaea, in 325 and in 2025

May 20 is celebrated as the start of the Council of Nicaea, which gave us the Nicene Creed. Will the Pope and Patriarch be together in Turkey in November?

“My election has taken place during the year of the 1,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. That Council represents a milestone in the formulation of the Creed shared by all Churches and Ecclesial Communities. While we are on the journey to re-establishing full communion among all Christians, we recognize that this unity can only be unity in faith. As Bishop of Rome, I consider one of my priorities to be that of seeking the re-establishment of full and visible communion among all those who profess the same faith in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Pope Leo XIV offered this reflection when he gathered Monday with representatives of other Churches and religions.

Pope Leo XIV holds a special audience for ecumenical and interreligious delegations who took part in the Solemn Mass for the Inauguration of his Petrine Ministry. In his address, the Holy Father highlighted Pope Francis’ emphasis on universal fraternity.
