Im Wald und Auf der Heide (In forest and in the heath) is a German hunting song, with lyrics written by Wilhelm Bornemann in 1816 and melody attributed to Ferdinand Ludwig Gehricke.
The song explains why the German hunter is happy: he tends to the forests, hunting hens, wild boars, deer and stags with his faithful dog. When he gets tired, he finds a friendly moss table where he drinks a little from his flask, eats two bites of bread, and happily smokes his pipe. In God's open field, he hunts the fox, who gives the hunter his rich coat. When the day is done, he is content to have hunted a lot, and goes back home, a merry huntsman. It is in the hunt that he finds his delight.
Note: Only verses 1 and 4 are sung in the first recording, and verses 1, 2, 5 and 6 in the second recording. We have included all the verses below for our readers' convenience.

German Lyrics:
1. Im Wald und auf der Heide,
da such ich meine Freude
ich bin ein Jägersmann,
ich bin ein Jägersmann
Die Forsten treu zu pflegen,
das Wildbret zu erlegen,
mein Lust hab´ ich daran...
mein Lust hab´ ich daran...
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
mein Lust hab´ ich daran.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
mein Lust hab´ ich daran.
2. Trag ich in meiner Tasche
ein Trünklein aus der Flasche,
zwei Bissen liebes Brot;
zwei Bissen liebes Brot;
brennt lustig meine Pfeife,
wenn ich den Wald durchstreife,
da hat es keine Not,
da hat es keine Not.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
da hat es keine Not.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
da hat es keine Not.
3. Im Walde hingestrecket,
den Tisch mit Moos mir decket
die freundliche Natur.
die freundliche Natur.
Den treuen Hund zu Seite
ich mir das Mahl bereite
auf Gottes freier Flur,
auf Gottes freier Flur.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
auf Gottes freier Flur.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
auf Gottes freier Flur.
4. Das Huhn im schnellen Zuge;
die Schnepf´ im Zickzackfluge
treff´ ich mit Sicherheit.
treff´ ich mit Sicherheit.
Die Sauen und die Hirsche
erleg´ ich auf der Pirsche,
der Fuchs läßt mir sein Kleid,
der Fuchs läßt mir sein Kleid.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
der Fuchs läßt mir sein Kleid.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
der Fuchs läßt mir sein Kleid.
5. Und streich ich durch die Wälder
und zieh´ ich durch die Felder,
einsam den vollen Tag;
einsam den vollen Tag;
da schwinden mir die Stunden
gleich flüchtigen Sekunden,
tracht´ ich dem Wilde nach,
tracht´ ich dem Wilde nach.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
tracht´ ich dem Wilde nach.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
tracht´ ich dem Wilde nach.
6. Wenn sich die Sonne neiget,
der feuchte Nebel steiget,
mein Tagwerk ist getan;
mein Tagwerk ist getan;
dann zieh´ ich von der Heide
zur häuslich stillen Freude,
in froher Jägersmann,
in froher Jägersmann.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
in froher Jägersmann.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
in froher Jägersmann.
English Translation
1. In the forest and on the heath,
there I seek my joy—
I am a huntsman,
I am a huntsman.
To tend the woods faithfully,
to harvest the game—
in this I find my delight...
in this I find my delight...
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
in this I find my delight.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
in this I find my delight.
2. I carry in my pocket
a little drink from the flask,
two morsels of good bread;
two morsels of good bread;
my pipe burns merrily
as I roam through the woods—
there is no care at all,
there is no care at all.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
there is no care at all.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
there is no care at all.
3. Stretched out in the forest,
friendly Nature spreads
a table of moss for me.
friendly Nature spreads
a table of moss for me.
With my faithful dog by my side,
I prepare my meal
in God's open fields,
in God's open fields.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
in God's open fields.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
out in God’s open fields.
4. The grouse in rapid flight;
the snipe in zigzag flight
I hit with certainty.
I hit with certainty.
The wild boars and the stags
I bring down while stalking;
the fox yields up his coat,
the fox yields up his coat.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
the fox yields up his coat.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
the fox yields up his coat.
5. And as I roam the forests
and wander through the fields,
alone the whole day long;
alone the whole day long;
the hours slip away
like fleeting seconds,
as I pursue the game,
as I pursue the game.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
as I pursue the game.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
as I pursue the game.
6. When the sun is sinking,
and damp mists rise,
my day’s work is done;
my day’s work is done;
then I head back from the heath
to the quiet joys of home,
a happy huntsman,
a happy huntsman.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
a happy huntsman.
Halli, hallo, halli, hallo,
a happy huntsman.
