Avertantur Retrorsum

Avertantur retrorsum is the second psalm of King David sung on Maundy Thursday. Like the first, it is a prophetic foretelling of the sufferings to be endured by Our Lord in His agony in the Garden of Olives. He sees the coming outrages that will be made against Him and beseeches God for help.

Avertantur retrorsum is here sung by Stefano Baldi, Mario Mori and Paolo Mettifogo.

Deus in adjutorium Meum intende: Domine, ad adjucandum Me festina.

Ego vero egenus et pauper sum: Deus adjuva Me.

EnglishLyrics:

Let them who devise evils against Me be turned back, and let them blush for shame.

O God, come to My assistance: O Lord, make haste to help me.

Let them who seek My soul be confounded and ashamed.

Let them who devise evils against Me be turned back, and let them blush for shame.

Let them who presently say to Me: Aha! Aha! be turned away blushing for shame.

Let those who seek Thee rejoice and be glad: and let those who love Thy salvation say always "The Lord be magnified."

But I am needy and poor; O God, help Me.

Thou art My helper and My liberator: O Lord make no delay.

Let them who devise evils against Me, be turned back, and let them blush for shame.
