Sepulto Domino

Reflections for Holy Week

Sepulto Domino is the eighteenth and final Responsorio for Holy Week. This response marks the end of the Passion. Our Lord is dead and buried. The tomb is sealed with a large stone serving as its door. The chief priests, fearing that Our Lord's disciples would steal away His Body, petition Pilate to place a guard around the tomb. The guard is granted and the soldiers keep watch.

Sepulto Domino was composed by Fr. Tomás Luis de Victoria
It is here sung by the Ensemble Corund.

Latin Lyrics:

Sepulto Domino,
Signatum est monumentum,
Volventes lapidem ad ostium monumenti.

Ponentes milites qui custodirent illum.

Accedentes principes sacerdotum
Ad Pilatum, petierunt illum.

Ponentes milites qui custodirent illum.

Sepulto Domino,
Signatum est monumentum,
Volventes lapidem ad ostium monument.

Ponentes milites qui custodirent illum.

Translation:

The Lord was buried,
They sealed up the sepulchre,
Rolling a stone as the door of the tomb.

Placing soldiers to guard it.

The chief priests went to Pilate
And petitioned him.

Placing soldiers to guard it.

The Lord was buried,
They sealed up the sepulchre,
Rolling a stone as the door of the tomb.

Placing soldiers to guard it.
