Holy Week Liturgy

Astiterunt Reges

Astiterunt Reges is the sixteenth Responsorio for Holy Week. This meditation focuses on the hatred of the world for Our Lord. Those who are strong in earthly power plot together against Christ, rejecting Him and God the Father, Who sent Him. Everywhere the nations roar against God, for man is eager to embrace the incoherences of world instead of its True Savior.

Astiterunt Reges was composed by Fr. Tomás Luis de Victoria.
It is here sung by La Colombina

Listen to Astiterunt Reges

Latin Lyrics:

Astiterunt reges terrae,
Et principes convenerunt in unum,
Adversus Dominum,
Et adversus Christum eius.

Quare fremuerunt gentes?
Et populi meditati sunt inania?
Adversus Dominum,
Et adversus Christum eius.

Translation:

The kings of the earth rise up,
And the princes meet together
Against the Lord,
And against His Christ.

Why do the nations rage?
And the people devise incoherent things?
Against the Lord,
And against His Christ.
