Oddi,   January 26, 1979

Wojtyla, founder of the "Catholic Woodstocks"

The January 26, 1979 issue of the Italian magazine Oddi published the picture
of Cardinal Karol Wojtyla above with the following data and comments:

PICNIC IN THE PINES - Zakopane (Poland). A photo taken in the woods during a rest after a long hike in the mountain region. Then-Cardinal Wojtyla is seated close to a pine tree and has a red bandana on his head. He is with two young women - one in pants and other in a mini-skirt - and a young man with a nude torse. At their feet are backpacks and sleeping bags. Obviously, this excursion will last more than one day and they will spend the night outdoors.

The group had around ten persons, although the others are not seen in the picture. It was by organizing this kind of field or mountain excursions with youth of both sexes from his Archdiocese of Krakow that the future Pope mantained a lively contact with his people.
